Grandaddy
The Warfield

Review by Squid

Along time ago in a galaxy far, far away, before the yahoogroups and the Hemlock and the resurgence of pointy white stilettos...before any of that, there were just these two chicks. They didn't really know "anybody" and they didn't really "do anything". They just loved music. And of all the music they loved, they loved a band from Modesto named Grandaddy the best. They would jump up and down at the mere mention of their names, they would giggle while they waited in line for their shows, they would spend entires Sundays stuffing themselves with brunch and booze and playing their b-sides.

A lot has changed since then. There have been write-ups and role-changes and notoriety and a whole list of beautiful experiences and opportunities that have befallen Deb and I. But one thing that hasn't changed is our love for Grandaddy. That's why we plunked down $30 a piece to return (once again, fer chrissakes), to the Warfield. (No, we can't really recommend Pete Yorn. We are not familiar. However, we are sure he is very nice to animals and children.) That's why the Goddess of Timing enabled us to slide thru the door with just enough time to grab a beer before the lights went dim. Somethings are just meant to happen, man.

So what did we hear? Well, we certainly didn't hear Street Bunny, although Squid's plea for it elicited a laugh and an "I wish" from Lytle...we did get to hear/see a great deal from their upcoming whopper, "Sumday". We got to watch the footage of them completely flipping their minivan, which made Squid laugh til beer came out of her nose, but only because she knew they didn't get hurt. And we got to hear some of the hits. Some SquidnDeb favorites, like chartsengraphs. Then there was 'A.M 180', y'know, the one that says "Don't change your name, leave it the same, for fear I may lose you again". "That's my favorite song line of all time!", exclaimed Deb, happy as a kid at a birthday party. Coming from someone who knows as many songs as she does, that was no small statement. And Deb was more profound then she may have realized at that moment. A lot has changed. We've lost people and found new ones. We've accomplished things together and separately. But this music, Grandaddy's music, will always be an absolute space for us where We "diffuse bombs, walk marathons and take on whatever together." Grandaddy's music invariably brings us back to who we are: two chicks who looove music and will follow it wherever it takes us. No matter what.

Whatever. Together. :-)
