Lower Forty-Eight / Greenlight the Bombers Hemlock Tavern December 12, 2003 Review by Jake Thomas This fine evening of music was brought together by not one but two circumstances serving double duty as both a Playing in Fog show and a record-release part for local darlings Lower Forty-Eight. And as if you needed a third reason to attend this festive event, the opening act, Greenlight the Bombers, were playing out for the first time in over a year! Let it be said that there was no rust on them, and the fact that they hadnt played out in such a long time would have been lost on anyone who didnt know that beforehand and only listened they were very tight and together. They have a great Drive Like Jehu/Hot Snakes vibe that would surely be a hit with the kids if they can get their sound out there to the masses. I enjoyed them a great deal and hopefully theyll play some more shows soon and not wait over a year again like before. Ive seen Lower Lower Forty-Eight a few times this year and I like them more and more with each listen, so I was especially happy that this was a CD release party because that meant I would be able to listen to at work and in the car and not just at live shows. They, too, employee that Jehu sound, but they add a twist of math rock and metal into the mix that, while slight additions, really create a unique sound that is all their own. This was by far the longest show I had ever seen by them (maybe the only headlining show Ive seen as well, but dont hold me to that), but I never got tired of hearing them play like often happens in my ADHD-addled brain. And as an added bonus: at the show, when you purchased Lower Lower Forty-Eights new disc, you got a complimentary cd-r from Greenlight the Bombers! Now that is value my friends, and I like value. --- Read our previous Lower Forty-Eight reviews: June 12, 2003 @ 40th Street Warehouse January 3, 2003 @ Edinburgh Castle August 23, 2003 @ Toxic Beach ©2003 playinginfog.com |
