Playing in Fog Presents
Lower Forty-Eight / Greenlight the Bombers

Review by Jake Thomas

This fine evening of music was brought together by not one but two circumstances – serving double duty as both a Playing in Fog show and a record-release part for local darlings Lower Forty-Eight.

And as if you needed a third reason to attend this festive event, the opening act, Greenlight the Bombers, were playing out for the first time in over a year! Let it be said that there was no rust on them, and the fact that they hadn’t played out in such a long time would have been lost on anyone who didn’t know that beforehand and only listened – they were very tight and together. They have a great Drive Like Jehu/Hot Snakes vibe that would surely be a hit with the kids if they can get their sound out there to the masses. I enjoyed them a great deal and hopefully they’ll play some more shows soon and not wait over a year again like before.

I’ve seen Lower
Lower Forty-Eight a few times this year and I like them more and more with each listen, so I was especially happy that this was a CD release party because that meant I would be able to listen to at work and in the car and not just at live shows. They, too, employee that Jehu sound, but they add a twist of math rock and metal into the mix that, while slight additions, really create a unique sound that is all their own. This was by far the longest show I had ever seen by them (maybe the only headlining show I’ve seen as well, but don’t hold me to that), but I never got tired of hearing them play like often happens in my ADHD-addled brain. And as an added bonus: at the show, when you purchased Lower Lower Forty-Eight’s new disc, you got a complimentary cd-r from Greenlight the Bombers! Now that is value my friends, and I like value.
