Bottom of the Hill October 20th, 2000 Review by Squid Pinback is a supergroup of sorts, comprised of Rob Crow from Heavy Vegetable (and Thingy!!) and Armistead B. Smith IV (or 'Zach'), from Three Mile Pilot. Let's get straight to the point here: Pinback is one of those bands that must be seen live. Period. While other bands usually present cautious renditions of their songs in the interest of security, Pinback don't play a single song that doesn't require Jedi-like concentration. There's syncopation all kinds going on in here: witty use of vocals, Rob's little ornamental guitar riffs that show up outta nowhere, and we won't even try to describe Zach's bass playing. Suffice it to say, it reminds us of seeing Stewart Copeland play drums. In Ye Olde Pop Environs, some people are simply meant to play certain instruments. Speaking of instruments and equipment, Squid almost ripped Daz' arm off when she noticed that Rob has the Rebel Alliance symbol painted on his amp. Funniest moment of the evening: Rob's announcement that they were looking for a new keyboard player, since the current one is moving to Boston. This prompted a rather frank response screamed from the back, "Bad Moooooooove, Muthafucka!". For Rob's other projects, 'Thingy' (who Squid loves) and the 'Optigonally Yours' project: www.absolutelykosher.com |
