Pinback
Great American Music Hall

Review by Squid

The last few Pinback shows at Bottom of the Hill were packed to the gills, so we weren't really surprised that they were playing the Great American this time around. They've obviously caught on in the past year, as we barely recognized a single person in the entire venue.

There is seemingly unending debate about Pinback and the bands its members formerly inhabited. (To review, bassist Zach was in 3 Mile-Pilot, guitarist Rob Crow was in Heavy Vegetable.) Frankly there's no way you could've listened to the intricate pounding of their melodies and not be drawn in...most especially live. Nevermind the fact that Pinback knew their stuff, particularly when it came to Black Metal.

Audience member: (muffled yell)
Rob Crow: What? You want me to play some Black Metal?
Audience member: Slayer!
Rob Crow: (stops tuning, looks up) Slayer's not Black Metal.
Audience Member: Anthrax!
Rob Crow: Anthrax is definitely not Black Metal.

It was totally crazy to see the Great American stuffed with people who were well versed with the band's repertoire. The incredible roar from the audience at the beginning of 'Rousseau' made us beam like proud mothers. Proof that Pinback, much like The Aisler Set earlier this year, have paid their indie dues. They were, as always, complex pop at it finest.

*Squid would like to point out that this entire review was written without a single mention of Star Wars. Or the Rebel Alliance symbol on Rob Crow's amp. Or his onstage talk of Episode II Trailers and Boba Fett in Mandalorian Armor. Or the fact that he probably meant to say Jango Fett, who was Boba's predecessor and features prominently in EPII. No Bothans were harmed in the writing of this review. Thank you.
